Proto-Finnic is the reconstructed common ancestor of the modern Finnic languages, including Finnish, Estonian, Karelian, Vepsian, Livonian, and others. It was likely spoken in the region surrounding the eastern Baltic Sea, including southern Finland, Estonia, and parts of northwestern Russia, during the late Bronze Age to early Iron Age (around 1,000 BCE to 500 CE). Proto-Finnic is part of the Uralic language family and evolved from an earlier Uralic stage before diverging into the distinct Finnic languages we know today. Although it is not a language spoken in any present-day region, it serves as a theoretical reconstruction used by linguists to understand the historical development of the Finnic languages through the application of the comparative method and sound changes observed in its descendants.

Finnish is a Finnic language of the Uralic family, spoken by most people in Finland and ethnic Finns abroad. It is one of Finland's two official languages, along with Swedish. In Sweden, Finnish and Meänkieli (mutually intelligible with Finnish) are official minority languages. The Kven language, also mutually intelligible with Finnish, is spoken by a Finnish-descended minority in Norway's Troms and Finnmark counties.
