(1 Jan 2021) The start of the new year also marked end of the so-called 'transition period' since Britain's departure from the European Union 11 months ago.
Local people along Folkestone's picturesque sea front gave their thoughts on the historic day.
Stephen Mann, a 69-year-old local resident, said he was very pleased the transition period was over, adding that initially he had never thought Brexit would happen because "everyone was out to thwart it".
Pierre Condu, a 65-year-old man in the restaurant business, said he thought Brexit was the worst thing the country had ever done and added the country had been lied to.
Retired bank manager David Binks said he was quite relieved it was over so the country could move on.
Dariusz Klimek, who works as a production manager in the pharmaceutical industry, said "we should all feel excited", however,  he added it was a "shame" because the UK had been a member of the EU for over four decades.
Britain left the European bloc’s vast single market for people, goods and services at 11 p.m. London time, midnight in Brussels, on Thursday, in the biggest single economic change the country has experienced since World War II.
A new UK-EU trade deal will bring new restrictions and red tape, but for British Brexit supporters, it means reclaiming national independence from the EU and its web of rules.
