"Yeah, I mean, if I wasn't sure I could do it. I wasn't sure, I like projects that I'm not totally convinced at the beginning that I can pull off, pull it off, because I don't, I think that's how you get better. You know, you have to scare yourself. You have to be willing to take those risks, and you really have to be willing to strike out and fail. And I was really concerned that I had done that on this one because it was a big swing. And I saw the film and I'm just really happy to be in it. And I love the film and I'm really proud of my work in it. And that feels wonderful."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Hathaway, actor:
"What are my thoughts on it? Well, I hope it goes well. It might not. Sometimes it doesn't. I know what that feels like and I'm just - but here's the thing. At the end of the day, I love the movie and I hope to share that love with people. But if everybody else doesn't agree with me, it's not going to change how I feel about it. So I'm excited by the possibility that I might make some new film friends tonight. But I'm not, like my relationship with the film doesn't hinge on anybody else's reaction to it."

"Well, for me, it didn't, I think having the book as a resource was so valuable because it really opened up Eileen, my character, for me. It was like a deep dive into all of her thought patterns, into everything that was going on in her head. Sso that in because of that amazing resource, like bringing Eileen to life, wasn't complicated. It was the kind of the context, the circumstances and the journey that they go on together. That was the complicated part for me, but it made such a difference having an amazing team who was like, Will, the director and Luke and Anne being so collaborative and like open to kind of discussing and changing and adapting and yeah, we all kind of worked together to figure it out."

"I think I'm really excited to be in the theater with everyone watching it. That was my favorite part about my last experience of Sundance is like feeling like you're on this roller coaster ride with what it's like a 1200 seated theater. So being on that roller coaster with everybody, that's really exciting. It's like that instant reviews that come out afterwards that are scary for me and that I'm going to make a big effort not to read because I don't want to go into that black hole. So, yeah, a mix of emotions."

STORYLINE:
The moody, noirish film adaptation of “Eileen” debuted on Saturday (21 January 2023) at the Sundance Film Festival with New Zealand actor Thomasin McKenzie playing Eileen and Anne Hathaway taking on the role of the enigmatic Rebecca.

As Eileen, the title character of Ottessa Moshfegh’s debut novel, McKenzie had to do a lot of heavy lifting in translating the largely first-person book into a performance that wasn’t aided by an inner monologue or exposition.

Eileen is a strange young woman with a vivid, sensual, and sometimes dangerous imagination.
