Ola sat in the living room with her friend Zosia, watching a video by her favorite youtuber. When the youtuber smiled and asked: “And do you know who is famous from your town?😜”, both girls froze. Ola had moved to the small town of Zalesie only a year earlier, when her parents relocated, and Zosia, who had lived there since birth, thought for a moment before smiling: “Of course I do! Ms. Ela, who owns the small bakery near the market square. She’s the most famous person in the whole town!”
Ola was surprised: “Ms. Ela? That older lady with the constant smile who sells cakes at the market? I thought she was just an ordinary pastry chef. How could she be famous? She’s not an actress, she’s not a singer, she doesn’t do anything special…” Zosia laughed and nudged her gently: “That’s the best part! You don’t have to be famous for big things —sometimes it’s enough to do something with love, and people will remember you. Ms. Ela isn’t famous outside the town, but here in Zalesie, everyone knows her and loves her cakes.”
According to Zosia, Ms. Ela had owned the bakery for over 30 years. When Zosia was little, her grandma often took her to the bakery to buy raspberry shortbread —Zosia’s favorite cookies. Ms. Ela always knew the names of all the children in the town, knew their favorite flavors, and sometimes gave them a small cookie for free when their parents didn’t have money. “She bakes cakes with love,” Zosia said. “She doesn’t just do it for money. Every cake is baked with all her heart, and you can taste it. My grandpa says that when he was young, Ms. Ela baked the cakes for his wedding —and that was 25 years ago! He still remembers how delicious they were.”
The next day, Ola and Zosia went to Ms. Ela’s bakery. It was a small, warm place, filled with the smell of cake and fresh fruit. Ms. Ela stood behind the counter, smiling at the customers —a small, older woman with gray hair and kind eyes. When she saw Zosia, she smiled even more: “Hi, honey! How are you? Do you want your favorite cookie?” Then she looked at Ola and greeted her warmly: “Hi, girl. I’m Ms. Ela. I hear you moved here recently?”
Ola admitted that she didn’t know Ms. Ela was the most famous person in the town. Ms. Ela laughed, shaking her head: “I’m not famous, honey. I just love baking cakes and helping people. People here know me because I’ve been here for years, and their children have been eating my cakes since they were little. This isn’t fame —it’s just what I do with love.” Then Ms. Ela gave them two freshly baked cookies —raspberry shortbread for Zosia and strawberry cake for Ola. “Enjoy,” she said. “And when your youtuber asks again: ‘And do you know who is famous from your town?😜’, tell him about me —about Ms. Ela from the bakery.”
After leaving the bakery, Ola tasted the cake and felt it was the most delicious cake she had ever eaten. “Now I understand,” she said to Zosia. “You don’t have to be a famous actor or singer to be famous in your town. It’s enough to do something with love, and people will remember you.” From that day on, Ola often went to Ms. Ela’s bakery, and sometimes helped her bake cakes. When she later watched the youtuber’s video and he asked the same question, Ola wrote in the comments: “I do! It’s Ms. Ela from the bakery in my town. She’s not famous all over the world, but here she’s the most famous —because she bakes cakes with love, and that’s what matters most.”
In her opinion, true fame isn’t about being known by many people, but about being loved and remembered by those who do know you. And Ms. Ela —she had all of that. And that’s what made her famous in the small town of Zalesie.
