The Grateful Dead was formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1965, and initially featured only one drummer, Bill Kreutzmann. For the first two years, Kreutzmann handled all the drumming duties until Mickey Hart joined the group in 1967. Hart remained with the band until 1971, returned in 1974, and stayed on as part of the lineup until the band’s dissolution in 1995.

Even after The Grateful Dead disbanded, Kreutzmann and Hart continued to collaborate in post-Dead projects, most notably in the recent Dead & Company. But why did The Grateful Dead have two drummers, and how did they make it work?
