The outcome of the general election was a heavy blow for the SNP but for now it remains in office – and, nominally at least, in power.

Its loss of 38 seats on July 4 signalled a haemorrhaging of support for the Nationalists, leaving their separatist project on life support.

But the bleak reality is that in the meantime we’re still saddled with them - and will be, probably, until the next Holyrood election in May 2026.
