I'm playing the G major scale against the two chords Am7 and D9. When the Am7 chord is sounding, then the scale is Dorian or 2nd degree minor, and when the D9 chord is sounding then that same scale [G major] becomes Mixolydian or 5th degree major. So when the Am7 chord is playing the root note becomes A. When it's D9 playing then the root note is D. Please comment how you are understanding this.
