Memorial held in Hawaii for 2001 Ehime Maru boat accident victims
A memorial ceremony has been held in Hawaii for the victims of a maritime accident involving a Japanese high school training ship and a US navy nuclear submarine in 2001.

The Ehime Maru, which belonged to Uwajima Fisheries High School, sank off Hawaii after it was struck by the USS Greeneville on February 9, 2001, local time. Nine people died, including four students.

More than 20 people, including bereaved family members, attended the ceremony in Honolulu to mark the 25th anniversary on Monday.

A moment of silence was observed at 1:43 p.m., the exact time of the accident. The names of each victim were read out and the participants placed traditional Hawaiian leis on an altar.

Mizuguchi Tatsuyoshi, the father of one of the victims, said they have had various kinds of support since the accident. He said he is grateful that they are able to have a memorial ceremony in Hawaii, even though 25 years have passed. He said he hopes that such an accident never happens again.

Makizawa Mika, the widow of a teacher who died, said she is stunned so much time has passed. She said the lives that were lost will not come back, so she wants people to continue thinking far into the future about the value of life.
