Where humans, robots, mixed reality and the future of work meet: the Ars Electronica Futurelab was part of the research project CoBot Studio to suport collaboration between humans and robots by exploring means of effective communication, trust building and safe collaboration.

The Austria-wide research project was conducted by the LIT Robopsychology Lab at Johannes Kepler University Linz and six project partners, including the Futurelab. The final test in 2022 was performed in a mixed reality simulation environment in Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz - an immersive 3D experience space with 33 million pixels on an 16-by-9-meter wall and equally large floor projection. Here, the participants were part of a playful immersive test that included a real robot with whom they had to perform different tasks.

The Ars Electronica Futurelab's role was to provide the necessary hardware and software in Deep Space 8K - developed and continuously updated by the lab - as well as to collect, store and output the data. The results of CoBot Studio will soon be summarized in a research report by the LIT Robopsychology Lab, with the goal of supporting collaboration between humans and robots. After all, experts agree that the world of work will change fundamentally where robots come into play. To prevent the automatic migration of locations and full automation, collaboration can provide a middle ground.
