The Evening
The evening takes the clothes the skyline holds
And puts them on, its rim of trees is old
Two continents depart as you look round
One’s headed heavenwards, the other down
They leave you and you’re not quite part of either
Nor dark as houses as the night grows quieter
And not as sure that what you sing will last
The way they do, each evening’s rising stars
Impossible to pull apart, that life
Of yours, that’s anxious, ripening, giant-like
And taking turns to be obtuse or wise
