The relationship between tourism and Indigenous cultures is complex. Tourism can be both a driver for restoring, protecting and promoting Indigenous cultures and a destructive force that harms them. The relationship between Indigenous tourism and adventure tourism depends on the way one defines the latter. Although Indigenous tourism can and is part of so-called soft or culturally oriented adventure tourism, it may not fit well into definitions highlighting risk and physical challenge. This chapter is based on the assumption that adventure tourism facilitates respectful interactions, mutual sharing, and exchanges between hosts (both entrepreneurs and other community members) and visitors. It focuses on the features of authentic Indigenous adventure tourism experiences and the capability of such tourism to support the sustainable development of Indigenous communities. While adventure tourism can be part of the process in which Indigenous people claim more rights to represent their own culture, history and modernity, attention must be paid to power relations, Indigenous actors’ opportunities to freely decide whether and how to become involved, and the circumstances within which different Indigenous groups engage in tourism-related activities.
