With a name that hints at a history as an aquarium fish, the Celebes halfbeak (Nomorhamphus liemi) is native to the Indonesian island now more widely known as Sulawesi.
These Livebearers are adapted to a life at the water’s surface, where their peculiar jaw structure makes catching insects more efficient. In common with most livebearers, these fish are best kept in groups with more females than males - in smaller aquaria adding a single male to a few females will save a lot of sparring between rivals unable to escape one another. Providing plant cover will help the fishes feel secure and give some opportunities for newborn fry to escape their parents.
