Janaki is not much interested in studies. Because of this, she was getting beaten and scolded by his father. Although not interested in studies, Janaki was very interested in music. It was his musical talent that took her to the top of fame. At the age of three, Janaki sang all the difficult songs with questioning knowledge. Seeing his interest, his father sent her to Nathaswara Vidhuvan at the age of eight.

His first song was Penen En Aasi Pazhanthu Eno, which was featured in the 1957 film Vidhiyin Ulath. The very next day he got an opportunity to sing in a Telugu film. Janaki is fluent in 5 Indian languages Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.

Janaki in 1959 V. Married to Ramprasad. He encouraged her musical career. And he died in 1997 due to cardiac arrest during most of his song recordings. Their only son Murali Krishna lives in Hyderabad. His wife Uma Muralikrishna is a Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, dancer from Chennai. They have 2 daughters Varsha and Apsara.

She has won many awards for his music. Janaki is the winner of more than thirty awards from various states. She refused to receive the 'Padma Bhushan' award announced by the central government in 2013 when she was at the height of his fame when there were Padma awards by the central government. She bravely said that South Indian artists continue to be ignored. In 1992, when he went to Delhi to receive the National Award announced for the song 'Inji Iduppazhaka' sung in the film Devar Magan. To the reporters who interviewed Janaki, singer Minmini had sung the song 'Chinnach Chinna Aasi' in 'Roja' in the same year very skillfully.

I would have been very happy if that girl had got the national award I got.' It is not fair for us to continue earning fame and money by singing that the pioneer is capable of promoting such talented artistes and that opportunity is coming. Future generations should also make way. She had said last year that I have quietly retired from the music industry to give glory to my future generations before anyone criticizes me directly or indirectly.

Known as the "Music Queen" of South India, Janaki has won four National Film Awards and 33 different State Film Awards. She has received PhD from Mysore University, Kalaimamani Award from Government of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Rajyutsava Award from Government of Karnataka. In 2013, she refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award announced by the Government of India. She pointed out that it was too late and South Indian artists were not given due recognition.
