He was born in New York City to a French father and American mother. He received his education at the French University of Grenoble. He was fluent in 10 languages. He fought for the French Foreign Legion. He was an officer of the U.S. Marines; he performed tasks for the Office of Strategic Services, a wartime intelligence agency of the United States and a predecessor of the CIA. He was decorated with almost twenty medals. After the end of World War II he returned to civilian life, became an actor and played alongside John Wayne.
