Big Wave Surfing Rescue at Cortes Banks

Описание к видео Big Wave Surfing Rescue at Cortes Banks

Cortes Banks surfing expedition hosted by Garrett McNamara. Ms. Shawn Alladio conducts the recoveries on a Kawasaki Ultra LX, one of her 4 training Rescue Water Craft. Nothing is altered on the craft, they are the same ones students use in training courses. K38 volunteered to provide the water rescue coverage for himself and Keali'i Mamala for paddle surfing on December 20-21, 2012. We left San Diego onboard the Condor and ended up having seven athletes on board. It as a 10 hour drive to arrive on scene, heading back to the mainland was faster. I brought out 4 Kawasaki Jet Skis. This is one example of what a recovery looks like. These are actual timelines. When I set up to recover an athlete with their surfboard I have to select the best timeline in relationship to the athlete position and when they come up to the surface. This varies depending upon the type of fail and underwater submersion they are experiencing. If the next wave is too close to the center mark in the trough, I have to pull out for safety or the wave will catch me. Sometimes they surface early and the recovery is positive, other times the environmental factors prevent their recovery. This also depends upon how deep near the pit they are located and the amount of aerated water. The jet drive Rescue Water Craft do not function to optimal performance with aerated water which creates as a cavitation boil in the pump. Special thanks to all the athletes these days and my K38 Support staff: Andrew Kroll, Nik Hawks, Jonathan Hoover, Brian Largarticha and Guri Sjezer. Special thank to my children whom allowed me to leave so close to Christmas. This was a good time. Kudos to Shawn Dollar who paddle surfed the largest wave in history for 62' during this expedition, it was incredible to see his performance ride in person, then attend the XXL Big Wave Awards and see him receive the recognition for this May 3, 2013. Once again another video that recognizes the pure talent of these incredible athletes.
