"Our situation here is very difficult," says Mariam Mahamane, an 18-year-old mother of two in Mali. "Even when times are good, [my husband] earns very little, which allows us to have only one meal a day. But sometimes, when there is no work, we can go two or even three days without money to buy food."

When her son, Al Matar, became ill, he was diagnosed as suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Thanks to interventions made possible through funding from the European Union, he and other children suffering from the life-threatening condition are receiving treatment.
