CT, MRI and cancer risk. Radiation dose with CT and MRI explained.

There's always questions about radiation exposure from medical imaging. Patients want to know if radiation from computed tomography (CT) scans will increase their risk of developing cancer. the short answer is YES.
however, it is not that simple in real life.
Standard x-ray procedures, such as routine chest x-rays and mammography, use relatively low levels of ionizing radiation. The radiation exposure from CT is higher than that from standard x-ray procedures. In general, its higher then people got and survived in Japan from the bomb.

several factors will have effect on the dose you received. here they are

1. type of CT equipment: spiral, beam or dual.
2. type of procedure is important: CT of the head will give you about 2 mSv and full body CT will give you 20+ mSv.
3. size of the body part is important

THE BIGGER THE PERSON, THEN MORE SLICES NEED TO BE MADE, THE MORE RADIATION YOU WILL GET.

GENERAL RULE: the bigger the person (organ) the more radiation, the thinner the slices, the more radiation person gets.
I hope its clear?! :)
4. various organs in the body have diff. sensitivity to radiation. the most sensitive organ to radiation is bone marrow. people will develop blood cancer, then the digestive tract.

Due to cancerogenic effect of CTon the body, CT has strict indications. here they are
acute head injury;
suspected subarachnoid haemorrhage;
ureteric calculus;
acute cervical spine trauma with likelihood of fracture or dislocation;
suspected acute appendicitis.

MRI
MRI does not involve radiation (like an X-ray or CT scan),
maps the location of the water and then uses this information to generate a detailed image,
MRI scanner is 60,000 times stronger than the earth’s magnetic field!

Does MRI contributes to cancer? it does. we know that people who live umder power line have higher rate of brain cancer and blood cancer. however, all medical websites will say: No. MRI does not cause cancer.

Contrast material that injected before the procedure can cause sever kidney and brain damage
