Jeff has been making 4x Tiger Moth propellers for various customers, all at the same time - using the same materials, techniques and processes.

Whilst sanding down the props and getting them ready for varnishing, he noticed a BIG defect in one of the props, which effectively has turned that hunk of wood into a useless unairworthy paperweight. Super hard to see with the naked untrained eye, watch what happens when some acetone is applied to the defected area....

If this was to be put onto a plane, it would eventually catastrophically fail and spin itself to matchsticks. It will now most-likely serve as a master blank for the next Moth prop, or grace someone's office wall!

It is very rare for these sorts of cracks to appear, especially in the direction that it's running. Jeff has come across cracks ACROSS boards, but never running horizontally. He seems to think this may have been caused back with the wood supplier - something as small as a forklift accidentally setting the woodpile down a little heavily, or being bumped into etc.
