Majek Fashek was born to an Edo mother and an Ijesa father, and identified strongly with his Edo heritage. Over time, he also embraced traditional and spiritual influences—his name Fasheke is tied to Ifá divination in Yoruba, meaning “Ifá does not lie.”

Majek Fashek broke through as a solo artist in 1987, releasing “Prisoner of Conscience” under Tabansi Records. This album included the smash single “Send Down the Rain,” which catapulted him into national fame and earned him multiple awards.
He evolved his style over time—melding reggae, roots, rock, and native African rhythms into a unique hybrid. Known in the industry as “The Rainmaker,” he was celebrated for his emotive voice, spiritual themes, social commentary, and stage energy.
One of his notable global albums is “Spirit of Love” (1991), produced with Little Steven. On this record, he mixed reggae with drums, African rhythms and lyrical depth about love and society. He also toured internationally, collaborated with artists like Tracy Chapman, and aspired to cross borders with his message.
However, his life was never just smooth sailing. Rumors of financial struggles, battles with substance abuse, and health challenges plagued his later years.
⚰️ Death & Legacy
After years of declining health, Majek Fashek died in his sleep on June 1, 2020, in New York City, at the age of 57. Reports confirm he had been battling esophageal cancer. His death left the music world mourning a powerful voice lost too soon.
Though he passed away, his songs live on in radios, nightclubs, homes, and hearts across Nigeria and beyond. He continues to inspire emerging Afro-reggae, roots, and fusion artists. His influence shaped Nigerian reggae, enabling it to be part of the country’s musical fabric.
