In 1914 a young journalist called J.E. Williamson invented the photosphere which is a device used to capture scenes underwater. Williamson’s father was a sea captain and had built an interlocking iron tube with a windowed chamber to aid him in deep-sea scavenging.

Williamson realized if he added a lamp and a larger viewing chamber he could go down the tube with his camera and record the underwater world. After shooting some test footage his next step was to make a film, once he got some backing he headed to the Bahamas jumped on the Jules Verne and filmed his movie called The Terrors Of The Deep, originally called thirty leagues under the sea.
