“Bridge Over Troubled Water” was composed by Paul Simon of the American folk duo “Simon & Garfunkel.” Released in 1970, the single is from “Simon & Garfunkel’s” fifth album of the same name. Simon’s inspiration for the melody was from J.S. Bach’s “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.” The song’s title was influenced by the line “I’ll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in my name” from the 1959 song “Mary, Don’t You Weep.” Recorded in New York, the lead singer was Art Garfunkel, with Paul Simon on background vocals. The instrumental track for the song was recorded in California by session musicians.
Considered “Simon & Garfunkel’s” signature song, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was their most successful single. The song reached the top at No. 1 on the Canada 100, Canada Adult Contemporary, France, Indonesia, New Zealand, UK Singles, US Billboard Hot 100, and US Adult Contemporary charts. One of the most performed songs of the 20th century, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was ranked by “Billboard” as the No. 1 song for 1970.
The song has been covered by over 50 artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Merry Clayton, Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, Willie Nelson, and Linda Clifford, among others. Aretha Franklin’s single reached No. 1 on the 1971 US R&B chart. In 2003, the Clay Aiken double A-side single peaked at No. 1 on the Canada and New Zealand charts, and the “Artists for Grenfell Tower” charity single reached No. 1 on the 2017 UK Singles Chart.
