Post-match press conference with Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe after their 2-1 defeat away to Marseille in the UEFA Champions League league phase at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday 25 November 2025.

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle an early lead inside six minutes, reacting quickest after Sandro Tonali’s effort, before Pierre Emerick Aubameyang turned the game around with a quickfire second half brace, rounding Nick Pope for the equaliser just after half time and then finishing a Timothy Weah cross four minutes later. The result ends Newcastle’s three match Champions League winning run and cuts their advantage over Marseille to three points in the league phase table.

Howe reflects on another away defeat after leading, saying his side produced a much improved first half compared to Brentford and carried a real goal threat, but admits the manner of the two goals conceded and “chucking away” the lead again are hugely disappointing.

He backs Pope despite recent criticism, explains using Anthony Gordon centrally to press from the front while managing the load on his only fit number nine, and insists Newcastle must defend better after half time.

Howe describes the Champions League as an elite competition that was never going to be straightforward, praises how his players handled the hostile atmosphere and physical demands, and says that although tonight is a tough one to take there were positive signs and the squad is robust, experienced and ready to fight back in the remaining games.
