Today I visited Saint Vincent's, Newfoundland and Labrador to see if there were any whales. Well, there were a few coasting back and forth. A couple did leap out of the water, but for the most part they were simply drifting back and forth the beach and occasionally breaching with their mouths opened for a delicious meal of capelin.

I consider myself a respectful and rule-abiding drone hobbyist. If I saw a seal, I wouldn't consider flying my drone near because I wouldn't want to disturb it. If birds are nesting, I stay away. If someone is nearby, I inform them of what I am doing. I follow height regulations and maintain a line of sight. I take this hobby seriously because it is one of the few things I find peace in. Today I thought I was doing right by firstly avoiding the crowds (can't fly over crowds), secondly avoiding potentially injuring one of the numerous birds feeding, and lastly to not disturb the whales as they fed. So I filmed from an empty area of the beach and with my drone half a kilometre from shore.

Despite thinking I was being responsible, I found out I was wrong.

I say this because today I discovered after I filmed the whales that it is actually forbidden without a permit. I was reluctant to share the video, but figure since I already filmed it I might as well share it. I was approached by two researchers who were there with a drone as well. They asked if I had a permit, which I didn't because I didn't know I required one. I thanked the individuals who informed me of this regulation and you will never see another drone video of a whale from me. I learned my lesson today. I recieved my warning.
