Defying the censors: Dengê Gel evades Turkish jammer on shortwave

Описание к видео Defying the censors: Dengê Gel evades Turkish jammer on shortwave

There is a constant battle on shortwave radio between Turkey and Radyoya Dengê Gel, a Kurdish nationalist radio station. Turkey prohibits Kurdish nationalism within its borders. Turkey calls the Kurdish nationalists terrorists. It tries to block Dengê Gel by transmitting Turkish nationalist music and slogans over the same frequencies used by Dengê Gel.

In my experience, the Turkish jammer is always stronger here at my location in Johannesburg, South Africa. It uses a much more powerful transmitter (500 kW vs the 100 kW transmitter Dengê Gel uses in Tashkent, Uzbekistan).

However, in this video, Dengê Gel is the strong one. At the same time, the Turkish transmission is jamming the incorrect frequency, 10 kHz away from the Dengê Gel transmission. This happens all the time. Dengê Gel changes frequencies, Turkey chases it, sometimes more successfully, sometimes less successfully.

00:00 Clash of the radio waves
00:39 Dengê Gel 11520 kHz
01:14 Turkish jammer 11530 kHz
01:37 Jumping between the two signals
