The Battle of Batoche | Batoche National Historic Site | The Métis and Louis Riel 【4K】

Описание к видео The Battle of Batoche | Batoche National Historic Site | The Métis and Louis Riel 【4K】

Batoche in central Saskatchewan was declared a National Historic Site in 1923.

It was the site of the historic Battle of Batoche during the North-West Rebellion of 1885.

There is a visitor centre to interpret the events of the battle, and more on the Métis people.

The Métis settlement of Batoche was established in 1872.

Batoche is where the last significant battle of the North-West Rebellion took place in 1885.

Louis Riel, Métis leader, and founder of Manitoba issued the government with demands for Métis land rights.

He set up a provisional government with himself as president at Batoche.

On May 9, 1885 about 900 militia troops under Middleton's command, attacked a force of less than 300 Métis, Cree and Dakota fighters.

For two days, the Métis effectively resisted Middleton's forces by firing from rifle pits built under the command of Gabriel Dumont.

Weakened and running out of ammo and armed only with rifles against a force with a Gatling gun and cannons they were overwhelmed by the 4th day.

Riel and Gabriel Dumont escaped.

Gabriel Dumont fled to the United States.

Years later he was allowed to return and resumed his life as a hunter.

Riel later turned himself in and was eventually tried and hanged for treason.

He has been recognized as a Father of Confederation, a defender of his people, and as a protector of minority rights in Canada.

Riel remains the most famous Métis leader and an important figure for Métis people in Western Canada.
