http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com -- SkyPup antique ultralight, part 103 legal ultralight aircraft. The SkyPup originally designed by Steve Wood of Colorado was introduced in the early 80's. The Sky Pup is a single seat part 103 legal ultralight aircraft with an empty weight of 254 lbs. It is a high wing taildragger in a tractor configuration. Power was supplied by the Rotax 277 single cylinder two stroke engine using a 2:58 to 1 reduction drive. Other engines used included the single cylinder Cayuna with a belt drive system.

In talking to builders of the Sky Pup one of the considerations they had in building the SkyPup was the cost. When built from plans the SkyPup can be up and flying for less than $3,000.00.

The Sky Pup features two axis control with a center mounted stick connected to the elevator, and cables connected to the rudder pedals. The Sky Pup does not have ailerons instead it relies on the dihedral in it's wings and large rudder to turn. The large wing area and cantilevered wing make it stall and spin resistant. The SkyPup does perform well using the Rotax engine with a climb rate of well over 500 feet per minute, a cruise in the 45 to 50 mph range and a glide ratio of 12 to 1.

The landing gear is unique in that it uses wood beams. The craft can be flown as a wide open cockpit or doors can be added for use during colder seasons.

The SkyPup has a wood fuselage and uses foam wing ribs both covered in standard aircraft fabric covering materials with building times reported in the 400 to 600 hour range. The SkyPup is not available in kit form and is built from plans. One of the features of the SkyPup is that it is easily disassembled for ease for storage and transportation.
