This video explores a concept first taught to me by the late Kim Plainfield from his book Advanced Concepts. It's the idea of taking the 6/8 time signature and dividing it up into its common multiples of 2 and 3.

If you feel the time as 3 groups of 2 then you'll get a 6/8 which tends to have a little more frantic and "Ahead of the Beat" vibe... But if you feel the time as 2 groups of 3 you'll get that laid-back shuffle vibe.

Depending on how the band feels it... this can make or break the groove. you don't wanna be feeling a shuffle when the rest of the band is playing in straight 6/8... even though it works mathematically. It's a great idea to have control over both!
