My 2 year old's toy bear says "I love you" when you squeeze it and I was PROFOUNDLY uncomfortable when I heard it! It's not that I haven't heard it before, it's just that this time, it really caught me by surprise and reminded me of the importance of my role in her life: to affirm her with my words and action. We have to learn the importance of saying "I love you" to one another.

The toy was doing something that I was inherently created to do: express love. I don't like the thought of assigned love from inanimate objects. And then it got me thinking about the things we buy and what we communicate with those things.

In consumer and comparison culture, we're often led to believe that the things that we purchase can best show our love and gratitude towards others. But it's important to remember that it's not the material possessions that truly matter, but rather the words and actions that we use to express our feelings.

Don't let THINGS do a better job of expressing love than YOU do. Say it, mean it, show it. I'm committed to better affirming my love for my daughter with my words and actions.
