Playing guitar since June 2009, Millisa Henderson from Muskogee, has a great love for the instrument and music. She started playing at a week-long summer rock camp in June 2009 and began taking formal lessons in August 2009. She strives for her performances to be a positive influence and enjoyable experience for her audiences, and she desires to share her love of music with others. She plays electric, acoustic, and classical guitar and sings. She can perform in a variety of music genres and admires the work of guitarists Jason Becker, Ethan Brosh, Al Di Meola, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani, Bob Stanton, Mike Stern, and Steve Vai. She is also writing original music. Millisa has been lead guitarist/vocalist for two local youth rock bands and guitarist for the Muskogee High School Jazz Band and “Pride of Muskogee” Marching Band. She arranged the electric guitar music score for the marching band’s half-time show. She participates in the non-profit SPOTLIGHT Entertainment music program each month at Muskogee’s Historical Roxy Theater.
Her Oklahoma performances include The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (opening once for the Swon Brothers), Bare Bones Film and Music Festival, Azalea Festival Chili Cook-Off, Muskogee Heritage Days, Claremore Freedom Fest, Cookson Jubilee, Creek County Fair, 9/11 Freedom Walk, Oklahoma and Tulsa State Fairs, Porter Peach Festival, Poteau Balloon Festival, Robbers’ Cave Performing Arts Festival, TGA Kids’ World International Festival, and Tulsa International Mayfest. She has performed at the 2013 Northeastern State University Jazz Festival at Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where she won “Outstanding Soloist;” at the BOK Center playing the Star Spangled Banner for 2013-2014 Tulsa Oilers’ ice hockey games; on KSBI-TV’s “Oklahoma Live” show in Oklahoma City with her band and solo as 2014 OKC Festival of the Arts Idol competition winner; at the 2014 Tulsa Music Festival with the Tulsa Symphony for a Project Reach/SPCA fundraiser; and at the Hard Rock Café in Dallas, Texas, as part of artist Super T’s band for a domestic violence awareness fundraiser. She is a member of Guitarchestra, a Tulsa-based electric guitar orchestra that performs classical pieces arranged in rock style. With the SPOTLIGHT program, Millisa has performed in Tennessee at Tina Turner Heritage Days in Brownsville (September 2012, 2013, 2014); at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills (July 2013); at Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis (March 2014); and at Hard Rock Café in Memphis (March 2015). She has performed for SPOTLIGHT charity fundraisers in Oklahoma for organizations such as Alzheimer’s’ Association, American Red Cross, Blue Star Mothers, CASA, Gospel Rescue Mission, Infant Supply Closet, Kids’ Space, MCM Community Food Pantry, Monarch, and WISH.
Floyd Rose, the company that manufactures guitar locking vibrato arms, chose Millisa as winner of their “Floyd Rose Signed Dive Bomber Guitar Giveaway Contest” on December 24, 2013, for her video entry covering Van Halen’s “Eruption.”. The contest promoted the Floyd Rose website, and her video is posted there. Live Nation, the Beverly Hills, California, live events and entertainment company, featured Millisa’s “Eruption” video on their Facebook page on January 20, 2013. Over 80 videos were submitted on their January 13 post requesting new artist videos. Live Nation’s comment: “Watch this video and you’ll see why this young woman is going to be a guitar goddess.” At the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Millisa received a scholarship for and attended the week-long 2013 Guitar Sessions program and performed as part of Ethan Brosh’s Berklee Metal Ensemble. While there, she was asked to audition for and was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee’s 2014 Five-Week Summer Performance Program. At Five-Week in August 2014, she was a member of the World Ensemble and also auditioned for and was one of two guitarists selected for the All-Star Rock Ensemble, a top-level instrumental group. She received another scholarship for 2015 Five-Week and was a member of the Funk Fusion Blowout Ensemble and again, auditioned for and was selected for the All-Star Rock Ensemble. She was also awarded a full scholarship for Berklee’s four-year undergraduate music program to attend college there beginning Fall 2016.
