Born January 16, 2003, in Naples, Italy, and raised in Tennessee, Burns was a high school standout before starring at the University of Tennessee and Wake Forest. At Wake Forest in 2024, he went 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA, striking out 191 in 100 innings, earning ACC Pitcher of the Year and a No. 2 overall pick by the Reds in the 2024 MLB Draft. After a swift minor-league climb, Burns debuted in June 2025, striking out the first five batters he faced against the Yankees—a first since 1961. In eight starts, he posted a 5.24 ERA over 34.1 innings with 57 strikeouts, showing promise but struggling with command.

A Grade 1 flexor strain on August 12 sidelined Burns, raising concerns about his workload after 100.1 combined innings in 2025. His recovery, including a 45-pitch simulated game on September 7, has been smooth, and he’s now cleared for a “controlled” bullpen role to preserve his arm. “I’m pumped to compete,” Burns said, embracing the shift, which draws on his college relief experience. Francona noted, “We’re balancing his health with finishing the year strong.

The Reds face a tough schedule (Padres, Brewers, Cubs, Athletics). Their bullpen, strained without key arms like Emilio Pagan, needs Burns’ strikeout ability (10+ Ks in four of his last five starts). Fans are optimistic but wary, with some criticizing the front office for earlier delays.
