Lai Chi Wo Village has a history of more than 300 years. It is one of the largest and best preserved Hakka villages in the northeast of the New Territories, Hong Kong. There are Tsang and Wong people in the village, which is a rare Hakka village with two surnames in Hong Kong.
The 1950s was the heyday of the population, with nearly 1000 residents. In the 1950s and 1970s, with the decline of agriculture in Hong Kong, most villagers in Lai Chi Wo gave up farming and moved to European countries such as the UK or urban areas. The once fertile fields are gradually covered with weeds. The distinctive Hakka houses also collapsed without timely maintenance because they were empty.
The rural environment of Lai Chi Wo has also changed due to the loss of population, and the traditional culture that has been handed down for hundreds of years is even more critical. In 2011, the Hong Kong Countryside Foundation promoted rural cultural conservation and attracted some original residents and urban residents to the Lai Chi Wo Village for rehabilitation, which attracted the attention of people from all walks of life. It not only restored part of the agricultural land here, but also brought about the protection of the surrounding ecology.
If you want to know the history and culture of Hakka, you can go to Siu Ying Story Room, Chinachem Lai Chi Wo Story Room and Lai Chi Wo Cultural Hub to deeply understand the development process and traditional culture of this typical Hakka Village through words, pictures, objects and models.
Those who like to take photos for hiking in the mountains can take a walk on Lai Chi Wo Nature Trail. A large area of mangroves and the scenery of Yan Chau Tong Marine Park will certainly enable you to take many beautiful photos.
If you are interested in centuries old trees, you can visit three old trees with different shapes in Lai Chi Wo Special Area. They not only amaze the wonders of the natural plant world, but also make people feel the awe of the Hakka people towards the nature. If you are lucky enough, you can also see all kinds of rare plants and animals in Special Area.
Don't miss the Hakka houses when you come to Lai Chi Wo. The layout of straight alleys and cross alleys is better than that of many modern cities.
