The Prince Claus Fund and Creative Industries NL, in collaboration with Nieuwe Instituut, presented the panel discussion “Reimagining Future African Cities – Beyond Prescribed Futures”.

The panel discussion brought together the cycle II cohort of the Prince Claus Mentorship Building Beyond: artists, designers, architects, and researchers from a number of African countries, who look at how the proposed future of the African city is fueled by unsustainable dynamics and offer alternative tools and methods.

In four panels moderated by Prince Claus Building Beyond mentors Nzinga B. Mboup, Hicham Bouzid, Ola Hassanain , and Khensani Jurczok-de Klerk, the participants reflected on the paradox between various cities' present conditions and the ‘prescribed’ futurity of the African city.

Participating panelists: Ana Raquel Machava, Arafa C. Hamadi, Blqees Zuhair, Helen Zeru, Jepkorir Rose Kiptum, Mika’il, the Muezzin, neec nonso, Olufémi Hinson Yovo, Rania Atef, Sara Fahkry Ismail, Uzoma Orji, and Wezile Harmans.

The panel discussion was part of a day of talks and workshops at Nieuwe Instituut, which accompanied the exhibition "Water Cities Rotterdam. By Kunle Adeyemi" and was dedicated to critically exploring and (re)imagining the future of African cities.
