With a can suspended by a string, we will fill it with water. But first, we poke small holes near the bottom at an angle—so the water jets don't shoot straight out, but sideways in a specific direction. As the water squirts out, it pushes against the direction of the stream (thanks to Newton’s Third Law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction). Since the holes are angled, these reactive forces aren’t just pushing outward—they’re also creating a twisting force, or torque, on the can. This torque causes the can to spin.

The Greeks, particularly a guy named Hero of Alexandria (1st century AD), came up with an early version of this idea. He designed what’s considered the first recorded steam engine, called the aeolipile. It was a spherical vessel with bent tubes that expelled steam—just like the angled water jets—causing it to spin. Same principle, but with steam instead of water. It was mostly a novelty back then, but it shows just how clever those early engineers were with harnessing basic physical laws!
