Hunting wild bees is one of the oldest traditional occupations in many mountainous regions of Vietnam, especially in the Northwest, Central Highlands, and Central regions. This work, though it yields rare and flavorful wild honey, is extremely dangerous. Bee hunters often face treacherous terrain, harsh weather conditions, and, most perilously, the risk of being attacked by swarms of wild bees—a situation that can cause serious injury or even threaten their lives.
To find a wild beehive, hunters must venture deep into the forest, where the trees are dense, the air is humid, and wild animals roam freely. They rely on their experience, observing the flight paths of worker bees or listening for their distinctive buzzing sounds to locate the hive. Once a hive is found, the hunter often has to climb tall trees—sometimes dozens of meters high—or scale steep cliffs with only a rope or a few bamboo branches for support. Every move carries danger: a slip, a broken branch, or a snapped rope could result in a fatal fall.
The most dangerous moment comes when approaching the hive. Wild bees—especially the giant honey bee and ground bee species—are fiercely protective of their colonies. When they sense an intruder, thousands of bees surge out, forming a dark, buzzing cloud that attacks relentlessly. They sting the face, neck, and any exposed skin. The venom of wild bees is potent, causing severe swelling, burning pain, and, in some cases, anaphylactic shock in allergic individuals. Many hunters have had to jump into rivers or light thick smoke to drive the bees away, but not everyone escapes in time. Some have suffered hundreds of stings, losing consciousness right where they stood.
Despite the risks, the passion for wild honey keeps these hunters going. Wild honey is not only precious but also highly valuable, often called “the gold of the mountains.” A successful expedition can yield several tens of liters of honey—enough to sustain a family for months. For mountain dwellers, this is more than a livelihood; it is a source of pride, a testament to their courage and the wisdom passed down through generations.
Wild bee hunting is a journey of bravery and a deep bond with untamed nature. Yet it also reminds us of the fine line between harvesting and preserving. Every drop of honey collected is paid for with sweat, pain, and sometimes even life itself—a powerful symbol of the harsh beauty and peril of this age-old mountain craft.
