French philosopher Michel Foucault spoke about a type of knowledge that predated the internet. Still, he described a knowledge environment that he called 'Panoptic'; a place where knowledge about individuals is constantly being aggregated. Looking at the internet, we might say that we are now living in a digital panopticon. And according to professor Jan Blommaert from Tilburg University, "For him [Michel Foucault] the internet would have been an absolute marvel."
