An artificial reef has many similarities to a city and by appreciating this, it can be easier to understand how artificial reefs function and how to design them.

This has proven a very effective tool when explaining artificial reefs to stakeholders that are not marine biologists.

In our Marine Habitat Conservation and Restoration course, we teach the students about diversity enhancers, how to make them and how to construct an artificial reef with them.

Cities need to be ideally located. They need a supply of clean water, food, and a way to eliminate wastes. So too with reefs.

A vibrant healthy reef needs good water quality, a current that brings food and removes wastes.
