A company can get delisted from the exchange for various reasons such as insufficient market cap, company filing bankruptcy, or compliance failure with the exchange.

But what happens to shareholders?
Even if a company is delisted, doesn't mean you are no longer its shareholder, yet you can't trade on the exchange. So what happens to your shares, portfolio...losses...it all depends upon the conditions of delisting.

In case of Voluntary Delisting, SEBI ensures that the company gives these two options to shareholders:
1. Promoter or acquirer will have to buy back the shares at a price at which the maximum number of shares has been offered. Until this process is not complete, Delisting cannot happen.

2. Hold till you find a buyer on the over-the-counter market however this can be hard to sell.

In the case of Involuntary Delisting, in this case, promoters are required to buy back the shares at the value determined by an independent evaluator and often in such cases not selling your shares is utter stupidity as the involuntary delisting is an indicator of the bad fundamentals of a company hence not much of price can be secured.
