Despite interruptions from the weather, floods and material shipping delays, the walls are up, the new hide puller has arrived and the steel frames for the roof have been secured.
The four pillars of sustainability, animal welfare, safety, and carcase utilisation have guided the design of the new facility:
- sustainability: a new solar power system will provide 70% of the plant’s energy needs, and upgraded water recycling capabilities will reduce water consumption by 20%-30%
- animal welfare: new yards design and processing equipment are designed to reduce noise and aid low stress handling
- safety: new lairage facilities and a circular pusher yard are designed to separate people and animals as much as possible, along with new automated loading technology in the freezers that will reduce the risk of injury.
- carcase utilisation: every part of the animal has been considered and will have its own area to be packed and exported, increasing packing efficiency and product quality.
