RecordCast - Screen Recording in a Web Browser

A look at RecordCast from Pearl Mountain. This free service allows you to capture your screen and edit the result all within a web browser.

This is a quick run-through of the service. It's worth taking a look at yourself to see some features such as text layout, backgrounds and decoration.

There are plenty of bits of software out there to capture your screen from free versions to professional educational software to those designed with gaming in mind.

Recordcast does exactly this, but it's entirely browser-based. It also features a basic editor (NLE) to allow you to cut and re-arrange your clips and add local video files and music to your production. The feature set isn't as rich as something like Camtasia, but if you need to record your screen on, e.g. a work computer where you may not have access to other software, this might do the trick.

• Where do the Video Files Live?

I asked Pearl Mountain about this as I have no doubt that it will concern others. All files stored locally and are written to your local machine by the browser except for the thumbnail, which is added to your project page.

No data is sent to a third party. This is borne out by working on a project because you will be allowed to relocate the missing files if you clear them. If you no longer have the files, the project will be useless.

• General Thoughts

If you have full admin rights to your computer, you might be better off using dedicated software, but there may be times at work where this would be very handy. You probably can't justify something like SnagIt, nevermind an editor too.

It's still in beta, so hopefully, some of the little bugs will be fixed. Overall though, it's free, so it's worth a try. What have you got to lose?
