Historically, one of the most common reasons for scuttling a warship is to keep it from falling into the hands of an enemy. One of the most significant historical instances is the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919. Instead of allowing the victorious Allied powers of World War I to take the ships, the German commander had the entire fleet sunk.

The Navy calls these events Sinking Exercises, or "SINKEX. "What better way to train sailors and test advanced weapon systems than on a real, full-sized target? A SINKEX is a live-fire drill that provides invaluable, realistic data. It allows crews to practice complex targeting, launch torpedoes and missiles, and confirm that their weapons work exactly as designed.
