Fire is critically important to Longleaf Pine Ecosystems, but it wouldn't get very far without Wiregrass (Aristida stricta). Wiregrass growth is one good indication of a longleaf ecosystem's health, while another sign is hearing the call of the Bachman's Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis).

A few words from Peter:
Stand in an intact longleaf pine forest and it won’t be just the pines that stand out. You’ll see the blades of Wiregrass waving in the breeze, like a golden blanket on top of the pine needles. This grass performs so many important functions in the Fire Forest, and is an essential part of most healthy longleaf pine ecosystems. Learn about it, and the bird with the cool call that relies upon it in this video.

CORRECTION: While it is not yet federally listed, numerous entities suggest that the Bachman Sparrow is one of the fastest declining bird species in North America.
