A Bronze Age logboat is on display at the Perth Museum, and having modelled many vessels, all modern day, it was interesting to try a virtual reconstruction on this 3000 year old, prehistoric example. With permission an iPhone was used to do a quick 3D scan so that it would be possible to take a closer look on a PC. Using Polycam for the initial capture, a gaussian splatting option was tested after using the ‘Object’ mode to do the general capture.
To then bring a base mesh into #3dsMax, RealityCapture was used to generate a surface model. Due to the lighting conditions at the exhibit the processing struggles to resolve the centre of the logboat but the stern was successfully captured where there is some fascinating woodwork. According to the info found online (links to research papers are included below) repairs were made, at the time, to the logboat to try and fix splits in the wood and other issues. Although the various parts were not recovered at the excavation site the video shows the creation of at least a partial reconstruction of how things may have looked.
Please note, this is entirely a personal project and is not associated with or endorsed by any applicable organisation. The purpose was to try out some techniques using Apps on an iPhone and then an attempt was made to 3D model missing parts for a virtual reconstruction of this amazing artefact. What’s interesting in particular given our regular commercial work is that many of the terms associated with modern-day boats are applicable to this bronze age version!
