Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ is an ancient mosque located in the southwest of Bagerhat district of Bangladesh . There is no inscription on the mosque. So there is no exact information about who built it or when it was built. But the architecture of the mosque leaves no doubt that it was built by Khan Jahan Ali . He is believed to have built it in the 15th century. This Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ was built over many years and at a great expense. The stones were brought from the palace . It is located within one of the three World Heritage Sites of Bangladesh; Bagerhat city itself has been given the status of World Heritage Site. UNESCO gave this honor in 1985.
The Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ is about 160 feet long externally from north to south and about 143 feet long internally and about 104 feet externally from east-west and about 88 feet wide internally. The walls are about 8.5 feet thick. Sixty-domed mosque has a total of 81 domes, 77 in 11 lines and 4 in four corners totaling 81. In the evolution of time, people say 60 domes, Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ became known as sixty domes, since then it is known as sixty domes.
In the middle of the 15th century, a Muslim colony was founded in the mangrove forest of the Sundarbans, near the coast in the Bagerhat District by a saint-General, named Khan Jahan Ali. He preached in an affluent city during the reign of Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah, then known as 'Khalifatabad'. Khan Jahan adorned this city with more than a dozen mosques, the ruins of which are focused around the most imposing and largest multi-domed mosques in Bangladesh, known as the Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ or Shait-Gumbad Masjid (160'×108'). The construction of the mosque was started in 1442 and it was completed in 1459. The Historic Sixty Dome Mosque or ঐতিহাসিক ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ was used for prayers, and also as a madrasha and assembly hall.
