Wawi Navarroza in Conversation with Christopher Y. Lew

Описание к видео Wawi Navarroza in Conversation with Christopher Y. Lew

In this video, Filipina artist Wawi Navarroza walks us through her first-ever solo US exhibition The Other Shore at Silverlens New York.

Contemplating womanhood in its coexistence with other identities—artist, mother, maker—Wawi Navarroza discusses the layers in her work in which she has employed her own corporeal form as an artistic medium. Navarroza is joined by C/O: Curatorial Office founder Christopher Y. Lew who contextualizes the works, exploring concepts of syncretism and references in the artist’s work such as Spanish painter Francisco Goya’s La duquesa de Alba.

Through her artwork, Navarroza elevates the portrayal of women beyond mere material creators, positioning them as inherent, innate forces within both art and the world. The body of work featured in The Other Shore illustrates Navarroza’s artistic evolution, moving from a phase characterized by exclusively monochromatic and austere tones to her current, heightened practice defined by the embrace of vibrant, tropical hues.

‘The Other Shore’ by Wawi Navarroza runs through 2 March 2024 at Silverlens New York.
