The most common issue for a new pool owner especially for a seasonal above ground pool is a hazy or cloudy water. This is due to 4 factors.

1. High PH (and Alkalinity)
2. Filtration Issue
3. Algae growth.
4. CYA too high.

For my particular setup, the most common problem I have is high PH and filtration issue.

A. High PH because my source water have naturally high PH and high Alkalinity so when I add more water to my pool to top of I will have to make adjustment to the PH and Alkalinity. Also, since the pool is a lot smaller than regular size pool, the splashes you create while playing will aerate the water which will cause the PH to increase.

B. Filtration issue because filter/pump that came with my pool is not large enough so, I need to make sure that I clean the filter at least every 4 days or if I have a large bather load, I make sure that I rinse the filter right after we use it for the day. Neglecting the filter will result in the 3rd problem which is algae growth and this takes more time to fix.

C. Like what I mentioned above, the 3rd issue is algae growth. For the last 2 years that I have my pool I only experienced this once and that is when there are a couple of days of rain in our area and I was not able to go out and check the pool. I was able to fix this by shocking the water and maintaining the shock level for about 4 days.

D. CYA - For my setup I only need to add CYA at the beginning of each season. But a CYA that is too high will render the chlorine ineffective.

The first thing I do when I have cloudy water is check my chlorine and PH level. If I have chlorine, I know that I do not have an algae issue and I will just work with fixing the PH level. Another thing I noticed is that there is difference between a cloudy water with high PH and a cloudy water due to algae growth. If a water is just hazy but I can still see the bottom of the entire pool from the top then I just have a high PH issue. When I had the algae growth, the water is more like a milk is added into the water and it is hard to see the entire bottom of the pool.
