Are biodegradable and compostable plastics the answer to the plastics crisis?

Biodegradable and compostable plastics are cropping up everywhere nowadays as a proposed solution to the plastic crisis currently gripping the planet. Compostable cups, shopping bags and wipes are becoming the norm and on the surface it seems like a great way to make sure plastic - which is designed to be durable and stick around for a long time - doesn’t continue to harm the oceans, wildlife and us. But what do biodegradable and compostable mean, what are they made of and is the answer really that simple?
