In this tutorial you’ll learn how highlight or spotlight text or a section of a document in Adobe After Effects. You can do this with a Solid layer, a mask, and a couple of keyframes.

Here’s a quick recap:
First make a new Solid layer (Cmd/Ctrl+Y). Make it black and the Comp size. Lower the opacity to 50%. Use the Rectangle Tool to draw around the section you want to highlight. Change the Mask Type from Add to Subtract. If you want this effect to fade on, set keyframes on the Opacity property to fade it on. If you want the highlight to change positions over time, keyframe the Mask Path property then move the mask. Repeat as needed. That’s it!
