The first image of a black hole was released in April 2019 by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration and marked a historic milestone in astronomy. The image shows the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87), located about 55 million light-years from Earth. Rather than capturing the black hole itself, which emits no light, the image reveals a bright ring of glowing gas and dust swirling around it, with a dark central region known as the “shadow” caused by the black hole’s intense gravity trapping light. This achievement provided the first direct visual evidence of black holes, confirmed predictions made by Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity, and demonstrated the power of global scientific cooperation using a network of radio telescopes spread across the Earth.
