Ek Jut organized a session with Prof. Vibhuti Patel on "Gender Responsive Budgeting" on 22-7-2024 for its programme officers in Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odhisha, Delhi.
Report by Kalyani Raut, Ek Jut, Jharkhand, "During the session Prof. Vibhuti Patel built our understanding on basics of Gender Responsive budgeting (GRB) and its emergence its need and its impact and lens to look a at it through gender and intersectionality. Australia was the first country to provide GRB followed by South Africa. Now, Gender Budget initiatives are being attempted in 84 countries. GRB can be highly impactful when CSO and the community participate. Mostly the elected members play a vital role in assigning Gender-related budget Strategy for GRB:
Increase budgetary allocation
Improving the quality of resource input
Redistributing budget allocations
Changing the type and quality of goods and services delivered by the government
e.g. decentralization of Mid-day meal
Changing policy outcomes.
When changing the system or any development women come forward and they have to face violence it is important to have a budget for GBV. Livelihoods mission in central and state aims to promote the empowerment of women. Every section of the
community is taking budget seriously. Towards Equality Report, 1974, the sixth five-year plan-women and development,
Shram Shakti Report, 1988, the eight five- year plan are the steps towards gender equity. Economic participation, economic opportunity, political empowerment, educational attainment, health and wellbeing are the critical areas to work to come over gender gap."
"Ekjut has established itself as a credible development organization that has assisted in empowering some of the most marginalized communities to take control of their health. Every month, there are more than 100,000 women meeting to discuss maternal, newborn, child health, nutrition, mental health issues as facilitated by Ekjut trained facilitators.
