In this video, our actuator expert, Hunter Stephenson explains the functionality of a permanent magnet DC motor and how components like motor brushes, permanent magnets, the commutator, and the electromagnetic coil work together to create movement.
DC is short for Direct Current, and this type of motor is a rotary machine that converts electric energy into mechanical energy. The functionality of a DC motor is based on induction – creating an electromagnetic force by applying current through a coil. This creates a rotational movement, which is used to power the gears and eventually the spindle. This way, electric actuators are designed to transfer a rotational movement into a linear movement.
